Wednesdays are my relaxing day. I sometimes we have guest lectures, but I’m not running from class to class (Tuesday & Friday) and I’m not stressing about homework (that’s what Thursday & Monday are for). So, I really enjoy Wednesday. Sometimes, I use the day to stay at home and do yoga via YouTube instruction, other times I head into the city to find a new café, and eventually, I’ll use my Wednesday to walk through a castle or see a museum (once I remind myself that food and travel aren’t the only things to spend money on).
But what I really think is best about Wednesday is that I get a chance to be a different type of Copenhagener each week. One week, I’m going to the homey café and studying, the next, I’m a tourist in the city, and then I can be a blogger in a hipster café. I think this Wednesday, I probably went to the most hipster café in all of Copenhagen – it was a Pinterest suggestion, so what did I really expect?

I went in, ordered a hot cocoa and croissant, and sat at my table. That’s when I realized just how hipster this place was! Everyone was in all black, and the hot cocoa came in a literal bowl – not just a cup with no handles but a 45 degree angled bowl. The more I looked around the more I saw the different signs of hipsterism: 90s hats, dishes as decoration, “avocadomad” posters, plants everywhere. I really don’t mind hipsters, I think they are a little funny actually! And the hot cocoa was pretty yummy.

This is it!

Being in Copenhagen for so long means that I get to experience the many types of being a local. And I think that’s the most special thing about being abroad, is that you don’t just get a new perspective but many new perspectives. It’s just up to you to find them. So maybe next week, I’ll look for the local-tourist, or I’ll go for the outdoorsy hiker 🙂
Things I’ve learned:
- You can really drink hot cocoa from a bowl.
- Copenhagen is full of variety, you just have to look a little bit.
