Oof! I’ve been getting behind on the blog (sorry, mom and auntie). These past few weeks have been quite nice for me. Last week I visited Austria, and then the following week, I celebrated Thanksgiving with my host family. We’ve been decorating for Christmas by putting up candles and gnome plush figurines, and we also traveled to Germany to see a Christmas market down that way. My homework load is lightening as I finish final projects, so I’ve been able to explore and enjoy Copenhagen some more.
Going into this Holiday season, I think I have discovered the best parts of expereincing Danish-ness: balance and hygge (hoo-ga). I don’t know that I’ll ever be Danish really, but I think that these are two very important concepts in Denmark.
Throughout my time at DIS, I’ve been able to achieve more balance than I might otherwise. In the US, I often become obsessed with homework and Netflix (which is still pretty great), and don’t take time to enjoy family and friends and reflect on life. Lighter homework loads and increased travel oppertunites have been a blessing, allowing me to focus on self-discovery, personal growth, and finding great cafes – I’ve found myself more confident and more relaxed. I am hopeful to take this balance back to the US with me, by finding time to be outside, be with friends, and eat good food.
I’ve been finding hygge throughout the Holiday season more and more. Hygge is like “conscious cozy:” things like candles, warm drinks, family dinners. In Denmark, the winter is a key time for hygge. I like hygge quite a bit (partially because it’s a Danish word I can actually say), and I’m excited to share it with my family once back in the US, by curling up with a cozy blanket to watch a nice movie, bundling up for outdoor walks, and baking cookies.
I only have two more weeks left in Denmark (!) and I’m looking forward to ending on a positive note by exploring Copenhagen more, practicing hygge, and making memories with new family and friends.
Things I’ve learned so far:
- Denmark starts Christmas early (even October) and go all-out
- I’ve literally found so many great cafes in Copenhagen from my new-found free time
- Denmark’s balance and hygge are some of my favorite thing that I have to bring home
